Charter for Lexington Residents Reimagining Public Safety (LRRPS)

Formed in June 2021, LRRPS’s mission is to reimagine public safety in Lexington as it relates to Police Department operations. This includes collaborating with the Town of Lexington and the Lexington Police Department (LPD), raising awareness within the broader Lexington community, and encouraging town staff and officials to provide and promote an inclusive and equitable public safety environment for residents, employees, and visitors to Lexington.

In 2023, LRRPS is focused on the following areas:

1.    Work with members of Lexington Community to shape and promote the idea of a Community Advisory Board for Lexington that would coordinate discussions between the LPD and town residents.

2.    Continue effort to analyze and report on data regarding traffic stops in Lexington, building on similar efforts by the state.

3.    Review other communities’ efforts across the US and Massachusetts to implement non-armed responses for emergency calls in those communities.

In 2021-2022 LRRPS worked on the following:

1.        Obtain information and provide input regarding the recruitment and hiring of the new Police Chief and other staff.

2.        Obtain information and provide input regarding the proposed new Police Headquarters.

3.        Engage with the Town regarding the implementation of the May 2021 Anderson Krieger (aka Ortiz) report.

4.        Obtain information and provide input regarding LPD’s rollout and implementation of the December 2020 Massachusetts Police Reform Bill and its regulations.

5.        Obtain information and provide input to improve LPD’s data collection processes.

6.        Engage in an ongoing manner with the Town and LPD regarding matters of public safety as such issues arise.

7.        Begin defining a new vision for public safety practices & culture in Lexington.
